I watched my first Tintin movie at the weekend. It turned out to be a bit of Scooby Doo meets The Pink Panther, with some Benny Hill thrown in. I was hoping to hear my favourite French word, but it didn’t pop up. Instead I learned that while Snowy is really called Milou, Captain Haddock really is called Capitaine Archibald Haddock.
How odd, I thought. Haddock doesn’t sound a very French word and I don’t remember hearing or seeing it anywhere. So I looked it up. Guess what? Haddock does mean haddock – but only smoked haddock. Unsmoked haddock is (un) aiglefin.
When does the madness end?
